Old Fashioned Cocktails You Should Know How to Make

Having a small collection of essential cocktail drinks at your fingertips will serve you well when unexpected or last minute guests pay you a visit. Party planning is a breeze when you know what you are going to serve, so here are a few of my top recipes that I always keep on hand in my recipe box. There is a “Beverages” section in it ­čÖé

1. Pi├▒a Colada

Since this is my favorite cocktail, I have a modified version below.

  • 2 oz. of pineapple juice OR 1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks
  • 3 oz. sweetened cream of coconut (preferably Coco L├│pez)
  • 1 oz. white rum
  • 2 oz. unsweetened coconut milk
  • Pineapple slice
  • Maraschino cherry
  • 1 cup of ice

Blend pineapple or pineapple juice, coconut cream, coconut milk, rum and ice until smooth. Transfer blender cup to freezer for about 20 minutes until semi-frozen. Take out of freezer and blend again until slushy consistency. Garnish with pineapple wedge and cherry.

2. Cosmopolitan

  • 2 oz. cranberry juice
  • 1 oz. Triple Sec
  • 1 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • Sugar for the rim
  • Lemon Twist

Combine cranberry juice, vodka, triple sec and some ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake until chilled, then strain into a sugar rimmed cocktail glass and add lemon twist.

3. Long Island Iced Tea

Here’s an alternate version:

  • 1/2 oz. triple sec
  • 1/2 oz. white rum
  • 1/2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 1 oz. sweet and sour mix
  • 1 oz. of soda
  • lemon garnish

Pour triple sec, rum, gin, tequila, sweet and sour mix into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled, then pour into a glass an top with the splash of soda. Garnish with lemon.

4. Cuba Libre

  • 5 oz. cola
  • 2 oz. white rum
  • mint leaf
  • lime segment

Add all ingredients to a glass with ice cubes and stir well. Garnish with lime.

5. Blue Lagoon

Here is an alternate version:

  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. Blue Cura├žao
  • 4 oz. lemonade
  • lemon wheel
  • Maraschino cherry

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour into a over crushed ice into a tall glass and garnish with lemon and cherry.

6. Kamikaze

  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. triple sec
  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice
  • lime wedge

Add vodka, triple sec and lime juice into a shaker with ice until chilled. Strain into glass.

7. Bahama Mama

Alternate recipe:

  • 1/2 oz. dark rum
  • 1/2 oz. coconut-flavored rum
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine syrup
  • 1 oz. orange juice
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 cup of crushed ice
  • Maraschino cherry
  • orange wedge

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until slushy texture. Pour into glass and decorate with cherry and orange wedge.

8. Mint Julep

Alternate recipe:

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 oz. of Bourbon
  • 2 teaspoons of maple syrup
  • crushed ice

Place the leaves on the bottom on a glass. Mash the leaves until they are dark and fragrant. Pour the Bourbon and maple syrup and stir. Pour crushed ice over it, then garnish with a mint leaf.

9. Dirty Martini

  • 2 1/2 oz. vodka or gin
  • 1/2 oz. vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. olive brine from jar

Mix all ingredients into a chilled shaker. Strain into glass and throw olive in.

10. Salty Dog

  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 3 oz. grapefruit juice
  • 4 tsp coarse salt
  • lime or grapefruit segment

Add grapefruit juice and vodka to an iced cocktail shaker. Pour into a salt rimed glass and garnish with fruit wedge.

11. Mai Tai

  • 1 oz. white rum
  • 1/2 oz. dark rum
  • 1 1/2 oz. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1/4 oz. orgeat
  • Maraschino cherry
  • orange wedge
Orgeat syrup also known as almond creme

Combine white rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and orgeat into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds then pour into glass. Top with dark rum, cherry and orange segment.

12. Caipirinha

  • 4 lime wedges
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar or white sugar
  • 1 cup of cubed or crushed ice
  • 2 oz. cacha├ža (Brazilian spirit) use white rum if you don’t have it

Place the limes with the sugar in the bottom of the glass and muddle with a muddler until limes release juices. Don’t mash them too much because it will make the drink bitter. Add ice and cacha├ža. Enjoy!

13. Margarita

  • 1 oz. triple sec
  • 2 oz. lime juice
  • 2 oz. tequila
  • salt rimmed glass
  • lime wedge

Add triple sec, lime juice and tequila to a cocktail mixer full of ice. Shake for a few seconds and pour into salt rimmed glass. Add lime wedge.

14. Whiskey Sour

  • 4 oz. sour mix
  • 1 1/2 oz. whiskey
  • ice cubes
  • Maraschino cherry
  • lemon wedge

Mix sour mix, and whiskey into a chilled cocktail shake and shake. Pour into glass over ice cubes. Add cherry and lemon wedge.

15. Screwdriver

  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 4 1/4 oz. orange juice
  • ice cubes
  • orange wedge

Shake vodka and orange juice in a chilled cocktail shaker and pour over ice cubes into a glass. Add orange wedge.

16. Blue Tahoe

  • 1 oz. Blue Cura├žao
  • 1 1/2 oz. El Tesoro Platinum Tequila
  • 2 oz. champagne
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • ice cubes
  • lemon wedge
  • mint leaf

Add the Blue Cura├žao, lemon juice, Tequila to a glass over ice cubes and stir. Add top with the champagne and garnish with lemon wedge and mint leaf.

17. Strawberry Daiquiri

  • 1 1/2 oz. white rum
  • 2 oz. strawberry puree
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • crushed ice
  • strawberry
  • white sugar

Add white rum, strawberry puree and lime juice to a blender and ice. Blend until slushy. Pour into a sugar rimmed glass and add a strawberry for garnish.

18. Mojito

  • 1 1/2 oz. white rum
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 2 oz. soda water
  • ice cubes
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 4 lime wedges
  • 1 lime segment for garnish

Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge on the bottom of the glass and muddle to release lime juice and mint oils. Add the simple syrup and other lime wedges and muddle again. Fill with ice. Pour the rum over the ice and fill the glass with carbonated water and stir. Garnish with lime and mint leaves.

Zero sugar simple syrup. Keto friendly!

19. Blue Hawaii

  • 1/2 oz. white rum
  • 1/2 oz. dark rum
  • 1/2 oz. Blue Cura├žao
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 oz. orange juice
  • 1 oz. sour mix
  • ice cubes
  • Maraschino cherry
  • pineapple wedge

Combine all ingredients into a glass over ice and stir. Add cherry and pineapple wedge for garnish.
